WASHINGTON D.C. — In one of the most scathing political takedowns of the year, Vice President Kamala Harris has publicly criticized retiring Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon, leaving the longtime Republican lawmaker speechless and igniting a firestorm of partisan controversy ahead of the 2026 midterms.
The moment came just hours after Bacon, a moderate Republican known for occasionally breaking with his party’s hardline positions, announced his decision not to seek reelection in Nebraska’s competitive 2nd Congressional District. While Bacon framed his retirement as a personal choice to focus on family after decades of military and public service, Harris wasn’t buying it — and she made that very clear.
“Don Bacon never had the courage to lead,” Harris declared during a fiery appearance at a Democratic fundraiser in Omaha on Monday evening. “For years, he played both sides, pretending to be a moderate while enabling the most extreme elements of his party. Now that the heat’s on, he’s running for the exits. Nebraska deserves better, and America deserves leaders who don’t disappear when it gets tough.”

The Vice President’s blunt remarks, delivered before a crowd of roughly 600 Democratic donors and local activists, instantly went viral on social media. Within minutes, #DonBacon trended nationwide on X (formerly Twitter), with users fiercely debating the merits of Harris’s assessment and Bacon’s political legacy.
Bacon, typically known for his even-tempered persona, reportedly declined to comment when asked by local media about Harris’s statement. According to a source close to his campaign office, the Congressman was “caught completely off guard” by the Vice President’s personal attack and opted to remain silent rather than escalate tensions.
But others in the Nebraska GOP didn’t stay quiet for long.
Senator Deb Fischer quickly came to Bacon’s defense, calling Harris’s comments “classless and divisive.”
“For the Vice President of the United States to insult a decorated Air Force general and public servant like Don Bacon is disgraceful,” Fischer wrote on X. “It tells you everything you need to know about this administration’s priorities.”

Even so, Harris’s words seemed to resonate with some voters in the district, which has increasingly leaned Democratic in recent election cycles. In both 2020 and 2024, the Democratic presidential ticket carried Nebraska’s 2nd District — one of only a handful of split electoral vote districts in the country.
Madison Andrus, spokesperson for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), doubled down on Harris’s remarks in a statement Tuesday morning.
“Don Bacon saw the writing on the wall,” Andrus said. “He knew he couldn’t withstand another cycle of accountability for voting against Nebraskans’ health care, reproductive rights, and economic security. The Vice President told the truth, and we stand by her.”
Political analysts say the brewing feud highlights broader national tensions as Republicans brace for a challenging 2026 midterm landscape, with dozens of competitive seats in play and Donald Trump’s influence still looming over the party.

“This is about more than Don Bacon,” said Dr. Lisa Ramirez, a political science professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. “It’s about the deepening divide between moderate Republicans and the Trump-aligned base, and how Democrats like Kamala Harris are eager to exploit those fault lines.”
While Bacon has long walked a careful line between GOP loyalty and centrist appeal, he’s faced mounting criticism from the party’s right flank. Trump allies in Nebraska have repeatedly accused Bacon of being insufficiently supportive of the former president, particularly after Bacon declined to back Jim Jordan’s bid for House Speaker in 2023.
In a parting message posted Monday night, Bacon attempted to reclaim the narrative, writing: “I have always served with integrity and put Nebraska first. I’ll let my record speak for itself.”
But for now, it seems Harris’s biting critique has overshadowed Bacon’s carefully scripted farewell. The Vice President’s remarks have already become a rallying cry for Nebraska Democrats eager to flip the district in 2026 — and a warning to any remaining moderate Republicans contemplating their future.
As one liberal activist tweeted after the fundraiser: “Kamala came to Omaha and torched the old GOP guard. The message is clear: no more hiding behind military medals and half-measures.”
The Nebraska 2nd District race is now officially one of the most closely watched contests heading into the next cycle, and if Monday night was any indication, it won’t be a quiet campaign.
